LEAGUES
Oct 15, 2019: Wilson’s EvoShield becomes Official Lacrosse Protective Equipment Supplier of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) to launch the company’s marketing efforts in lacrosse.
Oct 16, 2019: Independent baseball’s Frontier League and Can-Am League announce they will merge for the 2020 season. Joining the Frontier League’s nine ballclubs will be five Can-Am: the New Jersey Jackals, Quebec Capitales, Rockland Boulders, Sussex County Miners and Trois-Rivieres Aigles. They will play in the new Can-Am Division, joined by the Washington Wild Things and Lake Erie Crushers. The seven remaining Frontier teams (Evansville Otters, Florence Freedom, Gateway Grizzlies, Joliet Slammers, Schaumburg Boomers, Southern Illinois Miners and Windy City ThunderBolts) will compete in the Midwest Division.
Oct 22, 2019: The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) awards Louisville, Ky., the NWSL’s fourth expansion team. Louisville is set to begin play in the 2021 season at Lynn Family Stadium, the soccer-specific, 14,000 seat venue opening Spring 2020. Soccer Holdings, LLC, the ownership group for USL Louisville City FC, will own and run the new franchise. Team name, logo, crest, colors, etc. will be announced “later this year.”
Oct 28, 2019: The Arena Football League (AFL) released a statement that the league was closing all team services and business operations units effective immediately. For the time being the league would not be suspending all league operations, and that it expects “that decision to be made within the next few weeks.”
TEAMS/VENUES
Oct 10, 2019: PepsiCo and its Frito-Lay division are named exclusive soft drink and salty snacks partner for SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park and new tenants in 2020, the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams. As a Founding Partner, PepsiCo gains category-exclusive marketing, sponsorship and promotional rights across the development; certain soft drink and snacking rights for SoFi Stadium, the performance venue and American Airlines Plaza; and host a 46,000-square-foot culinary and entertainment activation space in the stadium’s south zone.
Oct 22, 2019: Qualtrics and the Utah Jazz extend their jersey patch deal two additional years through the 2022-23 season. Rather than promote the Qualtrics name and brand with the patch, the software company donates the space for the cancer research campaign, “5 For The Fight.” It is the only NBA jersey patch dedicated to a cause. The original three-year deal, announced Feb 13, 2017, had one year remaining.
Oct 30, 2019: Schafer Condon Carter (SCC) named agency of record for Pacers Sports & Entertainment. SCC will be be responsible for driving creative and strategy for all Pacers Sports & Entertainment affiliates, including expanding the Indiana Pacers “We Grow Basketball Here” campaign (2019-20 season theme: “Indiana Style”), driving fan engagement and ticket sales and assisting the Pacers with major events, including the 70th NBA All Star Game.
EVENTS
Oct 28, 2019: New York Road Runners announce Volvo Cars as new Strategic Partner & Official Vehicle of TCS New York City Marathon. Volvo will also serve as the presenting partner of NYRR Virtual Racing Powered by Strava. This is the marathon’s first vehicle sponsor since Toyota in 2014.
