The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is an American college athletic conference whose member institutions are located primarily in the South Central and Southeastern U.S. and sponsors competition in 21 NCAA Division I sports (nine men's and 12 women's).
Founded in 1932, the conference has had 14 member schools (13 public and 1 private) since 2012 and is based in Birmingham, Ala.
The SEC is a founding member conference of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) for football.
