The Tampa Bay Rays are a Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise that joined the American League in 1998 and play home games at Tropicana Field in Saint Petersburg, Fla.

In Mar 1995, the Tampa Bay and Phoenix, Ariz., markets were each awarded MLB expansion franchises—for a $130 million franchise fee—with the Tampa ownership group led by Vince Naimoli.

Naimoli sold controlling interest to current owner Stuart Sternberg in 2005.
