SunTrust was founded in Atlanta in 1891 as Commercial Travelers' Savings Bank, restructuring in Nov 1893 to become Trust Co. of Georgia. The company is now part of Charlotte, N.C.-based Truist.

Following a Feb 7, 2019 merger agreement with BB&T Co., based in Winston-Salem, N.C., the two companies completed their merger Dec 6, 2019, to become Truist, creating the sixth-largest U.S. commercial bank based on assets and deposits, serving a combined 10 million households. (
