The New York Knicks are a National Basketball Association (NBA) team based in New York City, playing home games at Madison Square Garden (NBA capacity: 19,812).

On June 6, 1946, 19 men gathered at the Commodore Hotel in New York to form the Basketball Association of America (BAA). Those in attendance included Madison Square Garden president Ned Irish who was awarded the BAA's New York franchise.
