The Carolina Hurricanes are a National Hockey League (NHL) team founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association (WHA) and based in Boston, Mass.

The founding ownership group included New England businessmen Howard Baldwin, John Coburn, W. Godfrey Wood and William Edward Barnes.

The team moved to Hartford, Conn., for the 1974 season to play at the brand new Hartford Civic Center.
