The American Athletic Conference (AAC), often shortened to The American, is a NCAA Division I athletic conference based in Providence, R.I., that came into its current existence in 2013. Mike Arresco has been conference commissioner since 2013.

The AAC currently has 12 member universities and six associate members fielding 22 sports -- 10 men's and 12 women's. Football is played in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

The conference's legal predecessor is actually the Big East Conference with both the AAC and Big East claiming the founding date of May 31, 1979.
