Started in 1964 as Wawa Food Market in Folsom, Pa., privately-held Wawa, Inc. today owns and operates approximately 900 convenience stores along the U.S. East Coast, with locations in Del., Fla., Md., N.J., Pa., Va. and Washington, D.C. More than half the locations include gas stations.
The company actually traces its history to 1803 and the Wawa iron foundry. In 1890, George Wood relocated from N.J. to Delaware County, Pa, where he bought 1,00 acres and imported Guernsey cows from England to start Wawa Dairy Farm.
