Vancouver Whitecaps FC is a Vancouver-based Major League Soccer (MLS) club. Vancouver was granted the seventeenth Major League Soccer franchise on March 18, 2009. The team began MLS play with the 2011 season.
The Whitecaps were previously a USSF Division 2 team.
The team plays its home matches at BC Place in Vancouver, which it shares with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. BC Place is a 54,500-seat multi-purpose stadium that opened in 1983, but underwent a complete two-phase revitalization project between 2009-11.
