The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) is based in Huntersville, N.C., and fields 10 teams. Eight are located in the southeastern U.S. with two in Ill. and one in Ind.

The SPHL's history traces back through three short-lived leagues:

• Atlantic Coast Hockey League - played just the 2002-03 season and the dissolved
• ACHL member teams formed the core of two different leagues for their 2003-04 seasons, the South East Hockey League and the World Hockey Association 2; both leagues disbanded after their inaugural season
