In 1954, Ben Palmer invented the PartsWasher and to make it stand out, he called it the “Safety-Kleen” washer. Palmer decided not to sell the machines, but lease them and provide solvent removal and replacement. In 1968, he sold the company to Chicago Rawhide who bought an old oil plant in Chicago and re-opened the facility as a recycling or "reclamation" plant. In 1972, the company launched an oil filter and in 1987, it moved into oil recovery as well. In 2008, Safety-Kleen launched EcoPower recycled motor oil to consumers.
