Riddell is a sports equipment company founded in 1929 by John Tate Riddell, the head football coach of Evanston (Ill.) Township High School. Riddell had created the removable cleat in 1922 and formed the company seven years later when he developed a football shoe last in an action position instead of street lasts, as they had previously been made.
In 1939, Riddell added another game-changing innovation when invented the first plastic suspension helmet.
