Established in 1954 and based in New York City, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) is the union for current professional basketball players in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The union was founded in 1954, making it the oldest of the North American major league player unions. It was formally recognized by NBA owners in 1964.
The NBPA briefly became a trade association in 2011, when it was dissolved during the 2011 NBA lockout.
