Gander Mountain Inc. began in 1960 as a mail-order retailer based in Wilmot, Wisc. The company went through bankruptcy proceedings in 1996 and sold off its original mail-order business to Cabela's. In 2007, the company resumed online sales and bought waterspouts company Overton. By 2017, the company had grown to 162 locations but again went through bankruptcy.
On May 1, 2017, Camping World Holdings, Inc., acquired Gander Mountain at auction for an estimated $35.4 million. The chairman of CWH is Marcus Lemonis of the CNBC television show, "The Profit."
