The Arena Football League (AFL) is a now defunct professional indoor football league, that was based in Philadelphia, Pa.

The sport was invented in the early 1980s and patented by Jim Foster, a former executive of both the United States Football League (USFL) and the National Football League (NFL).

The AFL began play in 1987 and fielded teams annually through 2019, with the exception of the 2009, when the league went through Chapter 11 reorganization.
