The Alliance of American Football (AAF) was announced March 20, 2018, and began play February 9, 2019. The league was co-founded by CEO Charlie Ebersol and Head of Football Bill Polian. The eight team league operated as a single entity.

The inaugural teams were the Arizona Hotshots (who played at Sun Devil Stadium), Atlanta Legends (Georgia State Stadium), Birmingham Iron (Legion Field), Memphis Express (Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium), Orlando Apollos (Spectrum Stadium), Salt Lake Stallions (Rice-Eccles Stadium), San Antonio Commanders (Alamodome) and San Diego Fleet (SDCCU Stadium).
