Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) was the top level professional U.S. women's soccer league that contested three seasons from 2009-11.
Basic WPS timeline
Jan 17, 2008: WPS is announced, a reformed and reorganized version of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), which had operated for three seasons from 2001-03, before shutting down. Reports have pegged the WUSA's losses at $100 million.

Mar 29, 2009: WPS play begins with seven teams. The WPS also fielded seven teams for the 2010 season and then had six teams for the 2011 . . .
