DHL International was founded in San Francisco, Calif., in 1969.
The DHL name comes from the last names of the company's three founders: Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn.
Hillblom had worked as a courier for an insurance company while attending law school at University of California-Berkeley. He used a portion of his student loan money and enlisted his friends, Dalsey and Lynn, to partner on a new business transporting bills of lading for their first client, Seatrain Lines. They were the only U.S. company offering overnight international delivery service through the 1970s.
